Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. – Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter hosts Human Trafficking Awareness Public Forum
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (October 23, 2015) – Shelby County (TN) Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will shine a light on the horrors of human trafficking at a public forum on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at 3:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church located at 7289 Highway 64 Bartlett, TN. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings mainly for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor. It is a horrific crime against humanity on a local and global level. Mostly young girls— are trafficked and fall victim to this exploitation. We want you to join us for an afternoon to hear about we are affected right here in Shelby County. The FBI, Memphis Police Department Sex Crimes Unit, US Attorney’s Office of Ed Stanton and other community resource vendors will be on site.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Consisting of a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust:

International Awareness and Involvement
Physical and Mental Health
Political Awareness and Involvement
The Sorority was founded January 13, 1913, by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities. The Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides public service in the areas of Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Cordova, Eads, Fisherville, Germantown, Lakeland, Millington & Southeast Shelby County. The award-winning chapter was chartered on April 25, 2009, and has awarded over $50,000.00 in scholarships since 2011.
