Adult Tutor Training

Can you read this? Many adults in the Mid-South cannot. You can make a difference! With just 2 hours a week for 6 months, you can help teach an adult to read. You’ll meet one on one with an adult at a Memphis Public Library, Germantown or North Mississippi library. Our clients come to us in order to reach a variety of goals. Some may want to be able to get into a High School Equivalency (HiSet) class, help their children with homework, read the Bible, or get a driver’s license.

You’ll attend a one-day training that will go over how our program works, why teaching adults is different than children, and the basics to get you started tutoring an adult basic education learner or English language learner.

Memphis Heritage Christian School is offering free dinner aftercare for students in the Nutbush area. Students will enjoy a safe place for after school care, tutoring, homework help, extracurricular activities choice and free dinner.  Extracurricular activities include ballet, soccer, gymnastics, karate, dance, orchestral studies and culinary arts.  Students may also participate in activities and have dinner on the weekends.

High School students may also attend and “work” in aftercare, assisting younger students and gaining work experience to build their resume. Interested persons should contact Memphis Heritage by calling 901.377.7536, 901.335.7423 or

It’s time to spread the word, again, that First Book-MidSouth is accepting completed book grant applications.  We will be accepting them from 7/1 until 8/30/14.  Our board will meet mid-September to determine how we’ll allocate the $25,000 we’ve raised to give back to school-based and community-based tutoring and mentoring programs focusing on improving literacy levels among our neediest children.

Join us for a fun continuing education training where YOU will be the trainer!  Set up like a “speed dating” event, volunteers will be paired one-on-one to chat about their experiences and the ideas they have.  Every ten minutes, the entire group will switch partners!  This event is for both our new tutors and our seasoned volunteers!

Local Organization Promotes Literacy & Math Comprehension in a Holiday Fashion

Math Made Simple, Etc.  is on a mission to promotes literacy and math comprehension to residents of Memphis/Shelby community.  This SaturdayMath Made Simple will be hosting an open house to showcase their programs and spread a little holiday cheer!   The event will include pictures with Santa, Face Painting, Educational Games, Holiday Drinks & Snacks!  Special Christmas Carol entertainment!
