GET OUT THE VOTE: Memphis Pre-K Initiative, Early Voting November 1-16

Pre-K is an important issue not only for education and quality of life, but for economic and workforce development.  A child who attends pre-K is more likely to be kindergarten ready, is more likely to score higher on third grade readiness assessments, is more likely to have higher attendance rates, and is more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.   For these reasons and more, many of our LPBC partners are supporting the Memphis Pre-K Initiative.  The Pre-K initiative is a ballot referendum unanimously approved by the city council.  The purpose of the referendum is to raise the city’s sales tax by one-half percent which would raise the rate from 9.25% to 9.75%, or the equivalent of the sales taxes in all of the municipalities. This would fund Pre-K for more than 4,500 children in Memphis currently left out of the Pre-K system due to a lack of funding.  In addition, this proposed referendum would also generate $20 million dollars that will be earmarked to reduce property taxes.   Early voting takes place November 1st-16th and the Election Day is Thursday, November 21st. For more information, check out the Greater Memphis Chamber’s blog or the Memphis Pre-K Initiative’s website at www.memphisprek.com
