Girl Scouts Heart of the South and the Memphis Fire Department are teaming up to host HERo Day, a high adventure career exploration day for girls in grades  6th-12th designed to give them a glimpse into the thrilling world of fire and emergency medical services.  The event will be held on October 3, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chester Anderson Training Center, 4341 OK Robertson Rd, Memphis, TN 38127.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics only 3.7% of career firefighters are female. Girl Scouts believes that when it comes to careers, “if she can see it, she can be it.” Showing girls that women can succeed in fire or emergency medical service opens a world of career opportunities for them. The mission of HERo Day is to provide positive female role models for girls in these traditionally male-dominated fields.

On HERO Day, girls will have the unique opportunity to train alongside elite members of the Memphis Fire Department as they rappel from a two story building, experience simulated firefighting environments, learn Hands Only CPR, suit up in protective gear and tackle a life-saving obstacle course, meet women and men from the Memphis Fire Department and learn about the physical and educational requirements to become a member of the department.

Any girl in grade 6 to 12 may register for HERo Day, but pre-registration is required. Event fee is $20 per girls, which includes lunch, commemorative bandana and HERo Day patch. Girls can register online now until Friday, September 18 at www.girlscoutshs.org/hero.
