Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. – Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter in collaboration with The Red Door, Inc. hosts Housing Workshop

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (October 23, 2017) – Shelby County (TN) Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in collaboration with The Red Door, Inc. will educate and provide resources about today’s housing market at a public workshop on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. The event will be held at Baker Community Center located at 7942 Church St. Millington, TN. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Navigating through the home buying or home selling process can be a lot easier when you are armed with the right resources and information. We invite you to join us for a morning workshop to hear about the many resources available to assist you with purchasing or selling a home. Leon Dickson, Sr., President of Tennessee Realtors Association will be our guest presenter along with local community realtors, lending partners, and credit specialist will be onsite.

The Red Door, Inc. provides support and assistance to Shelby County, Tennessee by offering youth and adult economic, educational, health, and wellness services that will empower the lives of the community.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Consisting of a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The Sorority was founded January 13, 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities. The Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides public service in the areas of Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Cordova, Eads, Fisherville, Germantown, Lakeland, Millington & Southeast Shelby County. The award-winning chapter was chartered on April 25, 2009 and has awarded over $70,000.00 in scholarships since 2011. The Delta GEMS program of the Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been nominated for the Imani Mentoring Award with the Memphis CARES Mentoring Movement! The 8th Anniversary and Awards Celebration will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Memphis Education Association Building at 126 Flicker St. Memphis, TN 38104.

Regardless of which Tiger you are rooting for TSU or JSU, come join the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at the Southern Heritage Classic Tailgate on Saturday, September 12, 2015.  Food will be served from 11:30AM4:30PM.  Pay onsite $15 for the tailgate & purchase $20 game tickets. You can wear your paraphernalia or your ME PHI ME gear as you stroll at the TAILGATE AFTER PARTY at the tent.

The Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will award the Maggie McDowell Scholarship to qualifying Memphis City and Desoto County High School seniors in May.

Recipients of the scholarship will be those graduating seniors who have
demonstrated excellence in the following areas:  academic preparation, school and community involvements, and positive character traits.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University by twenty-two (22) undergraduate women.  These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to persons in need.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership of over 200,000 predominantly African American, college-educated women.  The sorority currently has over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea and the Virgin Islands.

  • The implementation of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
  • Produced children’s “Art Sense-Station” ; a showcase designed to enhance the five senses through artistic expression at the 2010 Census Day
  • The implementation of Delta’s EMBODI program
  • Conducted voter registration drives throughout Shelby County in conjunction with the NAACP
  • Conducted HIV/AIDS Seminars to Shelby County citizens
  • Participated in the 2010 Census Drive
  • Participated in the 2011 Grizzles Christmas Bike Giveaways

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

All African-American high school seniors, attending a public high school in the Shelby County, (TN) Alumnae Chapter service area, are eligible to apply.  (See attached school listing)


  1. Application Requirements:
  • A completed, signed, and dated application.  The application must be typed or printed in blue or black ink
  • A type-written essay on one of the topics listed on the Essay Instruction sheet
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from the following:
    • 2 Core Academic Teachers
    • 1 Community Service Leader
  • A copy of an official high school transcript with grades and class rank through December 2011 (this should be in an official sealed envelope if not it will be invalid)


  1. Completed application, essay response, letters of recommendation and official transcript must be mailed together in the same envelope and postmarked by February 24, 2012.
