Mt Vernon Baptist Church – Westwood (620 Parkrose Avenue, 38109. 901-785-1612) will give away over 600 backpacks filled with school supplies on Friday, August 5th, beginning at 6 PM.  Doors open @ 5 PM.

Parents must accompany children to this event and families from all zip codes are welcome.

YMCA Achievers Registration and School Supply Giveaway – Saturday, August 29th!

The YMCA offers excellent youth programming for children in grades 3-12! Come to the YMCA on Saturday, August 29th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and  find out more information about our exciting Y-Achievers and SWOT programs, and to participate in our school supply giveaway!  Space and supplies are limited, so make sure you register your child early!

Please join Agape Child & Family Services, New Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church, New Direction Christian Church, Soul Winners Baptist Church, and Orchard Christian Fellowship on August 8th and 9th, 2015 for the Hickory Hill Back 2 School Bash.  The August 8th event will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at New Direction Christian Church: 6120 Winchester Rd., Memphis.  The August 9th event will be held from 12 pm – 5 pm at New Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church: 6580 East Raines Rd., Memphis.

The Hickory Hill Back 2 School Bash provides an opportunity for partners to strengthen our community, connect our city’s resources and eliminate barriers to youth enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school starting with day one. The Hickory Hill Back 2 School Bash will be advertised in Hickory Hill schools via Shelby County Schools.

This is a two-day event that begins with a Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday where parents will receive vouchers for ALL youth to receive FREE haircut, hair styling (to first 500 children), uniforms, backpacks, school supplies and shoes on Sunday! There will be food, fun, and the Southeast Memphis/Hickory Hill community coming together to ensure their students are positioned for success. Notaries will be present to help with residency paperwork and vendors including Universal Parenting Place, Porter Leath and Shelby County Crimes Victims Services and Rape Crisis Center will be in attendance.

The St Paul Baptist Church will host its annual Health Fair and Back To School Picnic Sunday, August 3rd from 12:30PM to3:30PM.

This is an event like no other because not only will the church give away backpacks full of school supplies, free vision screenings and free haircuts, but kids will also enjoy a game truck, inflatable bouncer, inflatable basketball goal, a race car from Autobahn Indoor Speedway, face painting and Camaro Kings and Queens Car Show will also be onsite.

Parents can get blood pressure screenings and HIV testing at this event also.

Even though food trucks and Parker’s Water ice will be onsite, the church will provide free hamburgers and hot dogs to guests.

This event is open to the public and will take place at St. Paul Baptist Church located at 2124 East Holmes Road. Children must be present to receive school supplies. Documentation not required.

The church is still accepting backpack and school supply donations. If you would like to make a donation, contact Kim Durham, the Event Coordinator, at 901-830-8182.

Shelby County Schools district-wide registration is next Tuesday, July 29th from 8 am to 3 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm. The online pre-registration site is being finalized and will be available soon.

Parents must bring two approved forms of proof of residence for registration. Parents who live with another person must also provide a notarized Shared Residency Affidavit. http://bit.ly/WzJPfK

The first day of school is Monday, August 4th.

Student dress code will remain the same at all schools in 2014-15 unless a school completed the process to modify its dress code. SCS dress code policy: http://bit.ly/1sHUlyq

Student Meals: This year, EVERY student in EVERY school automatically qualifies for a free breakfast and a free lunch every day. No student will pay for a first breakfast or a first lunch. No one need complete a meal application. For “extra” items (cookies, chips, slushes, etc), use Mealpay Plus. ** SCS will no longer accept cash or checks in the cafeterias. Parents must pre-pay online by credit card, debit card or check using MyPaymentsPlus or by calling the MyPaymentsPlus Parent Support Center (877) 237-0946. Parents must know a student’s ID number to pre-pay. The student ID number can be found on a report card, student schedule, student ID card, transcript or from the school office or cafeteria. Student IDs may be obtained after July 28 by calling Nutrition Services at 901-416-5550.
