Paid National Media Internships for Minority Students 


The Emma Bowen Foundation is actively seeking applicants for its paid internship work/study program with national media companies. Any minority student (African American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American) who is a rising high school senior, graduating high school senior or college freshman, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, is interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, and plans to attend a four-year accredited college or university is eligible to apply to the Emma L. Bowen Foundation work/study program. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States, and speak and write English fluently to be considered. Your grade transcript, at least two (2) educational references from teachers and/or advisors, and a 500-to-1,000-word essay must accompany the application form.


The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees.


Students earn an hourly salary and matching funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is also a key component of the program-students are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic and work progress. An annual summer conference, a community service program and a mentoring program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience. Resource guides for both students and corporate supervisors are provided to maximize the student’s experience while in the program.


This unique, multi-year program prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the workforce with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for future advancement. Students work in a variety of functional areas (e.g., marketing, sales, finance, public relations, human resources, technology, news, web design, promotion, etc.) and rotate each summer. Currently, we have 260 active students nationwide and more than 500 graduates. Approximately 70-80 new students join the program each year.

City of Memphis Announces Application Process for MAP Lottery Selection
Memphis , TN – The City of Memphis Office of Youth Services and Community Affairs announced the application period for the Memphis Ambassadors Program (MAP) year-round enrichment program.   All applicants must be rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders, and live within the city limits of Memphis.  Interested participants must visit and complete an online application during February 28 – March 25, 2011.  
Using a random computer-based lottery process, applicants will be selected by Memphis City Council District and given a rank during the first week of April 2011.  The highest ranking applicants will be invited to an interview.  Once selected, MAP participants will receive quarterly stipends based on program attendance and participation.
MAP integrates community, business, and neighborhood alliances and provides a curriculum based on four core values: Education, Health, Civic and Social Responsibility, and Employability.  MAP also provides Service Learning Opportunities, Youth Leadership Development, Post Secondary Preparation, Cultural Enrichment, Life Skills Training, Career Exploration, Financial Literacy, and other youth-oriented activities.
The program operates out of nine sites throughout the seven Memphis City Council Districts.  Each site is supported by a community cluster, which includes faith-based institutions, businesses, schools, neighborhood organizations, non-profits, government agencies, parents, and volunteers.

American Cancer Society Mid-South Division, Inc. Internship Program


Summary:  The purpose of the internship program is to develop public awareness of the American Cancer Society. The Internship has a dual focus. First, it provides the intern with hands-on experience in the activities of non-profit organizations; and second, it provides in-depth knowledge of the American Cancer Society’s efforts in cancer control, volunteer involvement, and community outreach. Collaboration with educational institutions will also help establish the American Cancer Society as a viable career choice for people from diverse populations. Students assist in challenging projects within our research, education, advocacy, and patient support programs to fight cancer.

In general, internships benefit both the individual and the organization. Students gain experience in their chosen or related field, and the organization benefits from the intern’s commitment to the mission of the organization which hopefully results in a long-term relationship as either a full-time staff member or active volunteer.
