Music Lovers Invited to Levitt Shell’s 5 Fridays of Jazz at Memphis Library
Fridays have never sounded so good! Join us for 5 Fridays of Jazz at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Avenue). Offered in partnership with the Levitt Shell, this series of free concerts offers customers a chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy soulful sounds by local entertainers.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Levitt Shell in this premier event,” said Central Library Manager Stacey Smith. “This is a great opportunity for the Library to showcase a different side to our community. Music lovers who like jazz will definitely enjoy it!”
“The real experience is the Library after hours. That means music, dancing, dim lights, food, and drinks beneath the stars,” added Henry Nelson, Strategic Partnerships Coordinator with the Levitt Shell. “The aesthetic beauty of Central Library’s courtyard is the perfect setting, and it’s free. Let’s not forget that!” he continued.

March 4, 2016 – Memphis Standard Time (family night)
March 18, 2016 – The International Jazz Twins (Carl & Alan Maquire’s Quartet)
April 1, 2016 – Rhodes College Jazz Orchestra & Quartet
April 15, 2016 – Stax Music Academy Sextet & Vocalist
April 29, 2016 – Bill Hurd Quintet
“Music lovers can expect a relaxing but fun night with great food, great drinks, great music, and great company,” stressed Angela Massengale, Children’s Department manager and lead vocalist for Memphis Standard Time. “That’s what jazz is all about. Jazz is the link that joins it all together,” she said.
While at these exclusive after-hours events, customers will see the vast collection of Memphis music housed at Central Library, including more than 1,000 vinyl records, 900 CDs, and cassettes. From Gospel to jazz, rap to garage rock, and country to pop, it’s all here and all by Memphis musicians!
“Each musical note at these concerts is a celebration of the rich musical history that originated here in Memphis and branched out into so many genres in so many places,” Nelson explained. “This is a great time to experience and enjoy the arts!”
