Position Summary

The COOL program promotes and supports higher education attainment for first-generation, low-income students of average academic performance. The higher education coordinator is responsible for the daily functions of the in-school program for 11th and 12th grade students.  This includes participant recruitment, selection, and retention in the program; development and implementation of a higher education attainment curriculum; and database management of student records including academic progress and evaluation.


  1. Bachelor’s degree required (social services, social work, education or a closely related field)
  2. In-depth knowledge of higher education system and admissions
  3. Strong and proven background in the financial aid process and scholarship applications
  4. Must be a self-starter with proven project development experience
  5. Three years of experience in customer service, preferably in social services or education
  6. Must have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills and be able to relate and respond to teens
  7. Ability to build relationships and effectively track volunteers
  8. Proficient operating communication systems (computers, email, laptops, telephone, faxes, scanners, and presentation equipment), Microsoft Office, and various database systems
  9. Flexible hours, evenings, some weekends, and some travel required
  10. Transportation and insurance required
  11. Ability to welcome and respect people of diverse ages and races with sensitivity to civic and cultural issues
  12. Ability to handle client and donor information confidentially and discreetly

Major responsibilities and related tasks

Supervise classes to ensure student performance and success in attaining higher education

  • Maintain a student case load of at least 100 students per year
  • Recruit students; encourage participation and maintain enrollment
  • Develop appropriate grade-level higher education attainment curriculum
  • Conduct weekly higher education attainment classes, utilizing staff and volunteers to  present specific college readiness information
  • Conduct mandatory weekly one-on-one and/or small group meetings with each 12th grade student to track college/higher education enrollment progress; provide encouragement, and deal with any issues or challenges
  • Coordinate ACT preparation and testing sessions
  • Maintain contact with various organizations/corporations for career learning opportunities (i.e. internships or summer jobs)
  • Conduct quarterly meetings with parents; provide program updates, and encourage active support of their student’s higher education goals
  • Maintain accurate records and/files and databases of each student for

Coordinate college tours, career learning opportunities, and field trips to present students with the opportunity to experience college environments and make career choices

  • Contact local, state, and out-of-state colleges and universities to schedule various campus tours
  • Book hotel rooms and make room assignments
  • Make appropriate travel arrangements for each tour
  • Schedule campus events during tours

Coordinate and facilitate the mentoring component through the recruitment, screening, training and partnering of volunteers and for-profit/nonprofit partners with students to provide career learning opportunities

  • Recruit and appropriately screen adult mentors and career coaches
  • Conduct mentor orientation and continuous training
  • Coordinate all mentor/mentee events
  • Maintain contact with various organizations/corporations for career learning opportunities (i.e. internships or  summer jobs)

Other responsibilities

  • Attend community-based organization meetings representing MIFA and COOL as needed
  • Work with the COOL Advisory Council to develop and implement ideas for program enhancement
  • Work closely with the MIFA development team to ensure funder compliance through active and engaged relationships and communication
  • Other duties as assigned
