March Happenings at the Church Health Center

Award-winning musician Rev. John Kilzer hosts The Way, a service of recovery, at 6 p.m. every Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 1207 Peabody Ave. The Way focuses on recovery, encouragement, and hope. Music is a key component of the service with many local musicians stopping by to perform. The service, which is a joint ministry of Methodist Healthcare, St. John’s, and the Church Health Center, is free and open to the public. Make 2015 the year you quit smoking for good. The Church Health Center offers Commit to Quit smoking cessation groups each month. Four-week group sessions start the first Tuesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Church Health Center Wellness, 1115 Union Ave. Commit to Quit is free for Church Health Center Wellness members and $40 for the community. In collaboration and hosted by the Church Health Center (1115 Union Ave.), the Seafood Nutrition Partnership presents Eating Heart Healthy all March long on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. These seafood cooking classes are free and open to the public. Chefs include Ben Smith of Tsunami and Ayanna Johnson of Chef Du Jour, as well as Carolyn Nichols from the Church Health Center. For more information, call 901-259-4673.

 

Dru’s Place will host the Italian Open Spaghetti Gravy Cookoff on Sunday, March 8. Set up is at 3 p.m. and the judging will begin at 6 p.m.$25 per entry. All proceeds will benefit the Church Health Center. For more information or to compete, call 901-275-8082.

 

The Malco Ridgeway Cinema Grill will host a wine tasting to benefit the Church Health Center from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 12. The theatre, located at 5853 Ridgeway Center Parkway, will be hosting a sampling of a few select varietals in honor of the release of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. In addition, there will be a full spread of delectable hors d’oeuvres inspired by the locations in the film. Mark your calendar for Walking as One, the Church Health Center’s annual community event celebrating wellness in action in Memphis! Walking as One will be held at 9 a.m. on April 11 at Church Health Wellness, 1115 Union Ave. Registration is free, but fundraising opportunities are available by calling 901-272-7170 or visiting WalkingasOne.org .

Together with the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, the Church Health Center will host the Westberg Symposium from April 9-12 at the Peabody Memphis Hotel, 149 Union Ave. Participants will build on current knowledge of Faith Community Nursing practice through opportunities to interact in panel discussions and information-sharing forums and by learning from many experts in pre-conferences, workshops, and poster sessions. The first-ever Family Fun Day at Church Health Center Wellness, 1115 Union Ave., will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 18. Activities include family art, dance, nutrition, photo booth, food trucks, games, giveaways, live DJ & more!
